• Langgata, the pedestrian main street steps from the quay, lined with shops, cafes, and the Vitenfabrikken science center that tells the story of the city's bicycle and pottery industries
• A direct train from Sandnes sentrum to Stavanger, roughly 16 minutes, departing about every 20 minutes, for Gamle Stavanger's white wooden houses and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum
• A Lysefjord sightseeing boat to see Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) from the water, with its 604-meter cliff, waterfalls, and the Hengjane drop, without committing to the multi-hour hike
• The Preikestolen hike itself for those with the legs for it, a round trip of several hours from the trailhead
• Dalsnuten, a shorter, easier summit walk near town with views over Sandnes, Stavanger, and the surrounding fjords

Getting ashore

Ships berth at Sandneskaien at the innermost point of the harbor, in the city center, so you walk straight into town and onto Langgata. One day is plenty for the town itself, and enough to add either Stavanger by train or a Lysefjord boat, but not comfortably both plus the Preikestolen hike.
