Eidfjord is a village of under a thousand people at the head of the Hardangerfjord's innermost arm, hemmed in by steep mountain walls in western Norway. The draw is what lies above it: the Hardangervidda plateau, Europe's largest mountain plateau, and the Vøringsfossen waterfall plunging 182 meters into the Måbødalen canyon a half-hour's drive away. The village is tiny but the scenery around it is the reason the ship stops here.
What to do on a day in Eidfjord
- Vøringsfossen, Norway's most-visited waterfall, dropping 182 meters into the Måbødalen canyon, with a step-bridge spanning the gorge for head-on views, about 30 minutes' drive up-valley
- Hardangervidda Nature Centre at Øvre Eidfjord, a modern interpretive center on the plateau's climate, geology, and wildlife, under 10 minutes by bus from the village
- The Hæreid plateau trail, a 6 km loop from the tourist office at the pier (about 75 to 90 minutes) with fjord views and Iron Age burial mounds
- Eidfjord village itself, walkable in minutes from the ship: the old stone church, the waterfront, and Eidfjordvatnet lake just behind town
- Sysendammen, a large dam on the drive up toward the plateau, a common stop on combined Vøringsfossen excursions
Getting ashore
Ships dock alongside in the heart of the village, no tender, with the tourist office, shops, and cafes all within a 5-minute walk and the vessel in view the whole time. The village is compact enough to exhaust on foot quickly, so the day is built around getting up to Vøringsfossen by shuttle coach or tour (about 30 minutes each way, roughly 2.5 hours round trip). One day is plenty: the waterfall in the morning leaves the afternoon for a walk or the nature centre.

Weather and when to visit
- May to June. The driest part of the season and the longest days (close to 19 hours of daylight in June). Cool, with village highs typically around 12-16C; the plateau and waterfall are noticeably colder and windier, so bring layers.
- July to September. Warmest but wettest, with frequent rain (roughly 20 rain days a month in July and August) and village highs around 15-17C. Mountain weather at Vøringsfossen runs colder and can turn quickly; waterproofs are worth carrying even on a clear morning.
