Kirkwall is the Norse-founded capital of Orkney, an archipelago off Scotland's north coast where 5,000-year-old Neolithic sites outnumber and predate almost everything in Britain. The town's red-sandstone St Magnus Cathedral anchors a compact, walkable center, while the World Heritage stone circles and the buried village of Skara Brae sit a short drive west. It earns the day on archaeology that genuinely has no rival.
What to do on a day in Kirkwall (Orkney Islands)
- Skara Brae, the best-preserved Neolithic village in western Europe, with stone-built houses, beds, and dressers exposed by a storm in 1850, about 30 minutes west of town
- Ring of Brodgar, a dramatic Neolithic stone circle of 27 surviving stones set on an isthmus between two lochs, free to walk (about 30 minutes around the ring)
- Standing Stones of Stenness nearby, among the oldest henge monuments in Britain, an easy pairing with Brodgar
- St Magnus Cathedral, the 12th-century red-and-yellow sandstone cathedral in the town center, free to enter and a 5-minute walk from the town pier
- The Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, built by WWII prisoners of war from two Nissen huts, about 20 minutes south
- Highland Park distillery, a mile south of town, one of Scotland's most northerly working distilleries
Getting ashore
Most ships use Hatston Pier, an industrial deep-water berth about 2 miles from town, with a paid shuttle running 5 to 10 minutes to the Kirkwall Travel Centre; smaller expedition vessels sometimes tender into Kirkwall harbor itself, a 5-minute walk from St Magnus. The town and cathedral are easily done on foot, but the Neolithic sites need a tour, the seasonal Discover Orkney bus, or a long-pre-booked taxi. One day covers the town plus one cluster of sites, not the whole island.

Weather and when to visit
- May to June. Cool and bright with very long daylight, highs typically around 12-15C. Drier than late summer but exposed and breezy; pack a windproof layer for the open stone-circle sites.
- July to September. The warmest stretch, highs around 14-17C, but increasingly wet and windy into September. Conditions change fast on this exposed coast, so layers and rain protection matter even on a sunny morning.
