• Photograph Portree's painted harbor-front houses, right where the tenders land, then climb to Somerled Square in the town center
• Take the Stagecoach 57A or 57C bus north to the Old Man of Storr, a 50-meter basalt pinnacle on the Trotternish ridge, and walk up toward its base
• Continue the Trotternish loop to Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, a sea cliff of vertical basalt columns with a waterfall dropping straight to the sea
• See the Quiraing, the landslip ridge of green pinnacles and plateaus further along the same northern route
• Visit Dunvegan Castle to the west, the long-held seat of Clan MacLeod, if you commit to that direction instead of the ridge

Getting ashore

Portree has no cruise dock, so ships anchor in the bay and tender to the harbor pier; from there it is a short walk of roughly 5 to 10 minutes, with some stairs or an uphill climb, into the town center. One day is not enough to see Skye broadly. The island's headline sights sit 30 to 40 minutes out in any direction over slow single-track roads, so pick one zone, the northern Trotternish ridge or the western castle, and commit.

Weather and when to visit

• May to September (the summer cruise season when ships call). Cool and changeable, typically daytime highs around 13 to 17 C / mid-50s to low-60s F, with long daylight. Rain is frequent and fast-moving in any month; sun and downpour can swap within the hour. May is usually the driest and brightest.
