Marmaris is a Turkish resort town on a deep, pine-rimmed bay where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, with a small old quarter and castle tucked behind a long marina and seafront. The cruise quay sits right at the edge of town, so the castle, bazaar, and waterfront are a short walk away, and the bigger draw, a river-boat day trip to the Dalyan delta and the Kaunos rock tombs, is an easy excursion. It is a warm-season port, called roughly May through October.
What to do on a day in Marmaris
- Marmaris Castle and its museum, rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522 on a much older site, on the hill above the harbor with panoramic terraces over the bay
- Kaleiçi, the old town's cobblestone lanes of stone houses and cafes climbing the hill below the castle
- The Grand Bazaar, a covered warren of roughly a thousand shops selling carpets, textiles, leather, spices, and Turkish delight, where bargaining is the norm
- The seafront promenade and Netsel Marina, a long waterfront walk past yachts, cafes, and the Atatürk statue
- A full-day boat trip up the Dalyan River to the 2,500-year-old Lycian rock tombs of Kaunos, the river mud baths, and Iztuzu (Turtle) Beach where the river meets the sea
Getting ashore
Cruise ships dock at the quay beside the marina, a walk of roughly 10 to 15 minutes into the center, castle, and bazaar, so the town itself needs no transfer. One day is enough either to cover the old town and castle on foot at an easy pace, or to commit the day to the Dalyan and Kaunos boat excursion, but not to do both well.

Weather and when to visit
- May and June (early season). Warm, sunny, and dry with low rainfall, daytime temperatures climbing from the low 20s into the high 20s C and the sea warming through the 20s. Comfortable for the castle climb and the bazaar before peak heat.
- September and October (late season). Still warm, around 22 to 28 C, with the sea still warm into early October and rainfall low until the wet season returns in November. One of the most comfortable windows for walking the old town.
- July and August (high summer). Hot and dry, frequently above 35 C in the afternoon, with strong sun; the bazaar and castle steps are best done early in the day.
