Skiathos is a small, green Sporades island whose whole appeal is concentrated in one compact harbor town and a coastline of pine-backed coves. The town wraps around the waterfront below a maze of whitewashed lanes, with a tiny pine-covered Venetian fortress islet, the Bourtzi, jutting into the harbor. It rewards a slow walk and a short boat hop more than a packed sightseeing list.
What to do on a day in Skiathos
- The Bourtzi, a pine-shaded former Venetian fortress on a small peninsula reached by a causeway straight from the waterfront, free to enter, with sea views and an open-air theater
- Papadiamantis House Museum, the modest two-story home of writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, just off the main pedestrian street
- The Old Port at the western end of the waterfront, where fishing boats and water taxis tie up and the evening bars cluster
- The maze of Plakes and the old town lanes climbing the hill above the harbor toward the Agios Nikolaos church and clock tower for town and harbor views
- A boat trip to Lalaria beach, reachable only by sea, with smooth white pebbles, sea-carved cliffs, and the Trypia Petra arch
- A boat or rough-track trip to Kastro, the abandoned medieval clifftop town on the island's north coast
Getting ashore
Ships anchor off Skiathos Town and tender you to a jetty right in the harbor, so you step ashore into the center on foot with no transfer needed. One day is plenty to walk the town, the Bourtzi, and the back lanes, and still fit a half-day boat trip to Lalaria or a nearby beach.
