Mytilene is the capital and main port of Lesbos, the large North Aegean island near the Turkish coast that gave the world the poet Sappho and a long tradition of ouzo. • The Castle (Kastro) of Mytilene: extensive Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman fortifications on the hill above the harbour, with marble fragments from a Temple of Apollo reused in the walls and wide views over town and sea
• Archaeological Museum of Mytilene: housed in two buildings, strong on mosaics and sculpture, including the late-Roman House of Menander floor mosaics
• The harbour promenade: ouzeries, cafes, and the small Statue of Liberty replica, an easy waterfront stroll from the landing
• Agios Therapon church and the Ermou market street running back from the north harbour for shopping and local food
• The Roman aqueduct at Moria: a well-preserved arched section about 6 km north of town, for those taking a transfer out of the center

Getting ashore

Most ships tender passengers into the harbour that the town is built around, with the castle about a 15-minute, gently uphill walk from the landing. The center, promenade, museum, and castle are all walkable, so one day is enough for the town itself; reaching the aqueduct at Moria or the ouzo town of Plomari needs a taxi or organized transfer.

Weather and when to visit

• June-July (summer cruise calls). Hot, dry, and sunny, daytime highs typically around 27-30C and occasionally higher in midsummer, with an afternoon sea breeze. Rain is rare; the Aegean here stays relatively cool for the latitude, around 22-23C.
• September-October (autumn cruise calls). Warm and mostly sunny early on, easing from the upper 20s C into the low-to-mid 20s by October, when the first wetter spells begin to appear. Comfortable for walking the castle and town.
