Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and its most layered, stacking Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments along a curving seafront promenade rather than around a single ancient ruin. It rewards a walker: the port sits on the central waterfront, and the White Tower, the squares, and the early-Christian churches line up within an easy radius. This is a living university city and food capital, not a resort.

• The White Tower, the cylindrical 15th-century waterfront landmark whose seven-floor museum traces the city's history, with a city-and-sea view from the top
• Aristotelous Square and the seafront promenade, the social heart of the city opening straight onto the Thermaic Gulf
• The Rotunda and the adjacent Arch of Galerius, a 4th-century Roman cylinder later filled with early-Christian mosaics, beside the triumphal arch
• Hagia Sophia of Thessaloniki, an 8th-century Byzantine church with surviving mosaics, a few minutes' walk from the Rotunda
• Modiano Market and Kapani Market off Aristotelous, covered and open-air food halls for olives, cheese, and bougatsa
• Ano Poli, the upper town that survived the 1917 fire, with the Byzantine walls and the Trigonion Tower view over the gulf toward Mount Olympus on a clear day

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the central waterfront terminal a short distance southwest of the center, with no tendering, and the walk to Aristotelous Square runs about 10 to 15 minutes along the front, the White Tower about 30. One day comfortably covers the waterfront monuments and the markets; Ano Poli is the one stop worth a taxi to save your legs.

Weather and when to visit

• April to May (spring). Typically mild and greening, April highs around 20C and cooler mornings, May warmer with averages near 19C and more than eight hours of sun. Comfortable walking weather with occasional spring showers.
• June to August (summer). Typically hot and dry, daytime highs commonly in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, strongest in July and August. Plan shade and water for midday walking.
• September to October (autumn). Typically warm and settled, September averaging near 23C, October easing to around 17C with breezier, milder days. One of the most comfortable windows for a port day on foot.
