Santorini is the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera, and ships anchor inside that drowned crater with the whitewashed towns of Fira and Oia stacked along the cliff edge above. The draw is the caldera itself: the layered cliffs, the blue-domed churches, and the long view down to the water and the black volcanic islets at the center. It is also one of the most crowded ports in the Mediterranean, so timing is everything.

What to do on a day in Santorini

  • Fira, the cliff-top capital, with its caldera-edge walkway, shops, and the Archaeological Museum
  • Oia, the famous village at the north tip, blue domes and narrow lanes, reachable by bus or taxi in roughly 25 to 30 minutes from Fira
  • The cable car ride between the Old Port at Skala and Fira, a five-minute lift up the cliff face
  • The Akrotiri archaeological site, a Bronze Age town buried in ash, in the island's south
  • Pyrgos and the inland wineries for Assyrtiko tastings away from the caldera crowds
  • Kamari or Perissa black-sand beaches, reachable by bus for travelers who prefer the shore to the cliff towns

Getting ashore

Santorini is a tender port: ships anchor in the caldera and tenders run 10 to 15 minutes to the Old Port at Skala below Fira. From there it is the cable car (five minutes, but queues of one to two hours when several ships are in), the 588-step donkey path on foot, or the donkeys themselves. One day covers Fira and Oia if you move early; trying to add Akrotiri and wineries too is a stretch.

Weather and when to visit

  • Spring (April to May). Typically sunny and warming, highs climbing toward the mid 20s C by May, cool mornings, low rain, ideal for walking the cliff paths.
  • Summer (June to August). Typically hot and dry; the Meltemi north wind can blow hard for days, cooling the air and roughening the sea, strongest in late July and August.
  • Autumn (September to October). Typically warm in early October easing to cooler, occasionally cloudy days late in the month; sea still warm from summer.
