What to do on a day in Istanbul

• Explore Karaköy, the cafe and gallery district immediately beyond the Galataport promenade
• Walk roughly 15 to 20 minutes uphill through Karaköy's lanes to the Galata Tower for a panorama over the old city and the Golden Horn
• Visit Istanbul Modern, the contemporary art museum built into the Galataport complex itself
• Take the T1 tram from Tophane to Sultanahmet for Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, which stand a 5-minute walk apart
• Continue in Sultanahmet to the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace, the Ottoman sultans' seat above the Bosphorus
• Browse the Grand Bazaar and the nearby Spice Bazaar, a short walk from each other in the old city

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Galataport in Karaköy on the European side, an underground terminal with the waterfront open above. Karaköy and the Galata Tower are walkable, but Sultanahmet's monuments are about 3.5 km away and best reached by the T1 tram from the nearby Tophane stop, not on foot. One day covers either the Galata side plus a tram run to the main monuments, or the bazaars, but not the whole sweep unhurried.

Weather and when to visit

• April and May (spring). Typical highs climbing from the mid-teens to around 21C, among the drier months with comfortable walking weather. May is a strong window for the city and the Bosphorus.
• June (early summer). Typical highs around 25C with the longest daylight of the year and low rainfall, warm but not yet at peak heat.
• September and October (autumn). September stays warm with typical highs near 25C, October cools to highs around 12 to 19C. Both are pleasant, with weather fronts and rain days becoming gradually more frequent into October.
