Olbia is the working gateway to Sardinia's northeast and the glamorous Costa Smeralda, but the town itself is an easygoing, genuinely Sardinian place rather than a resort. Its center rewards an hour or two on foot: a pedestrian main street of 19th-century buildings, a Romanesque granite basilica from the 1100s, and an archaeological museum on the harbor holding the only Roman shipwreck recovered in Italy. It is a low-key half day rather than a marquee port, and that is its appeal.

What to do on a day in Olbia (Sardinia)

  • Basilica di San Simplicio, a granite Romanesque church built between the late 11th and mid-12th centuries, dedicated to the city's patron saint, in the old town within walking distance of the shuttle stop
  • Corso Umberto I, the pedestrian main street lined with 19th-century facades, shops, and cafes, the spine of any walk through the center
  • Museo Archeologico di Olbia, on a small peninsula in the harbor basin near the port, free to enter, displaying Phoenician, Punic, and Roman finds including a Roman ship
  • Piazza Regina Margherita and Piazza Matteotti, the characterful squares just off Corso Umberto that work as refreshment stops
  • The lungomare promenade south of the museum, a flat seafront walk with views across the bay

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Isola Bianca terminal about 2 km from the center, with a free shuttle covering it in roughly 10 minutes or a walk of about 25 minutes. The town is easily seen in a half day on foot, which leaves time to pair it with a transfer out to the Costa Smeralda beaches or the granite coast if you want more than the center.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to June. Warm and largely dry, with highs typically climbing from the low 70s into the upper 80s Fahrenheit (around 24 to 29 Celsius) by June. Long sunny days, though the sea is still on the cool side early in the window.
  • September to October. Still warm and pleasant, with September highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and a sea that stays comfortable for swimming through October. The first unsettled spells can arrive in the second half of September, so an occasional shower is possible.
