Portofino is a small fishing village turned harbor on the Ligurian coast, a horseshoe of pastel houses around a tight yacht-filled bay backed by wooded headland. It earns the day not for sights to tick off but for a compact, walkable hillside of a forted overlook, a clifftop church, and a shaded lighthouse path, all within a short climb of the water.

What to do on a day in Portofino

• Sit in the Piazzetta, the small harborfront square that is the center of village life, a flat walk from the tender landing
• Climb to Castello Brown, the hilltop fortress with the postcard view down over the harbor, about a 10-minute uphill walk
• Stop at the Church of San Giorgio (Chiesa di San Giorgio) on the way up, perched above the bay
• Walk the shaded path out to the Faro di Portofino, the lighthouse at the point, roughly 30 minutes each way with a small bar at the end
• Take the short ferry to Santa Margherita Ligure or to the San Fruttuoso abbey, both quick hops along the coast
• Browse the harborside lanes of boutiques and cafes around the bay

Getting ashore

Portofino has no cruise berth, so ships anchor in the Gulf of Tigullio about a mile out and tender passengers directly into the village harbor in 10 to 15 minutes. Everything in the village is on foot from the landing. One day is plenty for the town itself, since the appeal is the setting and the short walks rather than a list of museums.

Weather and when to visit

• May and June (early season). Typical highs around 23 to 26C, warm and largely dry with comfortable walking weather and lighter crowds than midsummer.
• July and August (peak summer). Typical highs near 29C, hot and sunny with very little rain, and the busiest crowds of the year. Early tender arrival beats the crush.
• September and October (autumn shoulder). Typical highs around 20 to 25C, mild and pleasant, with thinning crowds. October is the wettest month, so a passing shower is possible.
