Calvi sits in Corsica's Balagne region around a deep bay, with a Genoese citadel on a rocky point above a marina and a long pine-backed white-sand beach curving away from town. The walled upper town holds the cathedral and a house that Calvi claims as Columbus's birthplace, while the Quai Landry waterfront below runs the cafes and the marina. It is one of the easiest Mediterranean ports to do entirely on foot.

What to do on a day in Calvi (Corsica)

  • The Genoese Citadel, the walled upper town on the promontory, with cobbled lanes, bastions, and views over the bay, about a 15-minute walk from the tender
  • The Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste inside the citadel, which holds the Christ des Miracles crucifix
  • The site in the citadel where a house once stood that Calvi claims as Christopher Columbus's birthplace, marked by a plaque
  • Quai Landry, the waterfront promenade linking the port to the marina, lined with cafes and restaurants
  • Calvi beach, roughly 4 km of white sand backed by pine forest, starting at the edge of town and walkable from the port
  • The Tramway de la Balagne local train along the coast to the beaches at Algajola and on to Ile Rousse, boarded near the marina

Getting ashore

Calvi has no cruise pier, so ships anchor in the bay and tender you to the lower town at the foot of the citadel, dropping you in the center. The citadel and beach are both a short walk, so one day is more than enough to explore independently, with the coastal train an easy add for a beach village.
