Monaco is a two-square-kilometer principality stacked up a steep amphitheater of rock above its yacht harbor, and the ship puts you inside the postcard rather than near it. The two anchors are the Belle Epoque casino-and-opera complex in Monte Carlo and the medieval royal quarter of Monaco-Ville on The Rock, with the harbor and Grand Prix circuit streets running between them. A single day covers both halves on foot if you are willing to climb.

What to do on a day in Monte Carlo

• Monaco-Ville (Le Rocher), the old town on the fortified headland, holding the Prince's Palace, the cathedral, and the Saint-Martin cliffside gardens within a compact maze of lanes
• Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the cliff-face aquarium that drops about 85 meters toward the sea and was directed by Jacques Cousteau from 1957 to 1988
• Changing of the Guard at the Prince's Palace, daily at 11:55 a.m. on the palace square (black winter uniforms, white in summer)
• Monte Carlo Casino and the Opera de Monte-Carlo, the Garnier-designed Belle Epoque complex above the harbor, worth seeing for the architecture and the Place du Casino even if you do not play
• Port Hercule waterfront and the harborside stretch of the Grand Prix street circuit, walkable along the quays between the two districts

Getting ashore

Ships dock or tender at Port Hercule, the main yacht harbor; from the terminal you reach street level via elevators and escalators built into the rock. Monaco-Ville sits roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk and climb to one side and the casino about a mile around the harbor to the other, so everything is walkable but steep, and one day is enough to do both halves without an excursion.

Weather and when to visit

• May to early June (spring shoulder). Typically pleasant and increasingly dry, highs around 19 to 23 C (66 to 73 F), rain days tapering off; comfortable for the climbs up The Rock.
• July to August (high summer). Typically warm and sunny, highs around 26 C (79 F), sea breezes moderating the heat; bring sun protection for the open palace square and cliff gardens.
• September to October (autumn shoulder). Typically still warm and mostly dry early on, cooling and wetter toward late October as the Mediterranean rainy season begins.
