Philipsburg is the Dutch-side capital of Sint Maarten, a narrow strip of town wedged between Great Bay and a salt pond. The draw is how compact it is: a swimmable beach, a mile-and-a-half boardwalk, and a duty-free shopping street all sit a short walk from where the ship ties up. It is an easy, low-friction Caribbean day where you do not need a tour to fill the hours.

What to do on a day in Philipsburg

• Great Bay Beach, the town beach fronting the boardwalk, calm and swimmable and roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier
• The Great Bay Boardwalk, about a mile and a half long, lined with beachfront bars and restaurants
• Front Street, the duty-free shopping spine running parallel to the beach
• Fort Amsterdam, a 17th-century Dutch fort on the headland with brown pelicans nesting and views back over the harbor
• Little Bay Beach, behind Fort Amsterdam, the next quietest beach over
• Walter Plantz Square, the boardwalk square with murals and local color

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the A.C. Wathey cruise pier on Pointe Blanche, about a mile from town; you can walk the waterfront road to Front Street and Great Bay Beach in 10 to 15 minutes, or take one of three water taxis that drop at Bobby's Marina, Captain Hodge Pier, or Walter Plantz Square. One day is plenty for the town and beach, with time left for Fort Amsterdam.

Weather and when to visit

• December to February. Peak Caribbean dry season. Daytime highs typically near 82 to 85F, lows around 75F, northeast trade winds keeping it comfortable, and the lowest rainfall of the year (dropping toward 2 inches monthly by February).
• November. Still the tail of the wet season and historically the wettest month, near 6 inches of rain, with highs around 86F. Showers are usually brief but more frequent than in midwinter.
