Puerto del Rosario is the working capital of Fuerteventura, the Canary Island closest to the African mainland, and it is an unusually walkable call: the terminal sits beside the town, so you step off and you are already there. The city has reinvented itself as an open-air sculpture city, with more than 100 statues set among its white houses and a street-art scene, while the island's dunes and volcanic interior wait a short drive beyond.

What to do on a day in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura)

• Parque Escultorico, the city-wide trail of more than 100 outdoor sculptures, many of them clustered near the port and along the streets into the center
• Casa Museo Unamuno, the small free museum in the former hotel where exiled writer Miguel de Unamuno stayed in the 1920s
• Playa Chica, the sheltered town beach visible from the ship, with calm water and cafes a short walk from the terminal
• The seafront promenade where the main avenues meet, the liveliest stretch of town for a walk and a coffee
• Las Rotondas shopping center, the town's multi-floor mall about ten minutes on foot for shops and a food court
• Betancuria, the photogenic former island capital set in the volcanic hills inland, reachable by taxi or tour rather than on foot

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the cruise terminal at the end of the fishing quay, roughly 1km and a 10 to 15-minute flat walk from the town center, with most in-town sights immediately around you. One day is comfortable for the city on foot, and leaves time to add either a beach or a drive inland to Betancuria or the Corralejo dunes.

Weather and when to visit

• October to March. Mild winter, typical highs around 21 to 22 C with cool evenings; rain is rare and brief but the trade winds can be brisk, so a windbreaker is worth carrying
• April to June. Warming spring, comfortable and dry with steadily rising temperatures and reliable sun
• July to September. Warm and dry summer with highs into the high 20s C, persistent trade winds, and the warmest sea peaking around September
