Agios Nikolaos is a compact harbor town on the Gulf of Mirabello in eastern Crete, built around a small deep lake that connects to the sea by a short canal. The day works because the whole center is walkable from the pier, and the surrounding bay holds the Venetian island fortress of Spinalonga and some of Crete's better Byzantine fresco chapels.

Getting ashore

Small and mid-size ships dock right in town; larger ships anchor in Mirabello Bay and tender, landing you five to fifteen minutes on foot from the lake and center. One day covers the town plus one excursion such as Spinalonga or a beach, though the day gets tight if you are tendering.

Weather and when to visit

• April to June and September to November (shoulder). Typically warm, dry, and comfortable for walking, with plenty of sun and lower crowds than midsummer.
• July to August (peak). Hot and dry, highs around 82 to 90 F (28 to 32 C), with the afternoon Meltemi north wind common across the bay.
