Alghero is a walled Catalan town on Sardinia's northwest coast, where centuries of Aragonese rule left street signs in Catalan and a tight grid of cobbled lanes inside sea bastions. It anchors the Coral Riviera, named for the red coral still worked in its jewelry shops. The headline trip is offshore: the boat run out to Neptune's Grotto beneath the Capo Caccia cliffs.

What to do on a day in Alghero (Sardinia)

  • The walled old town (centro storico): a roughly hour-long circuit of the sea bastions and Gothic-Catalan lanes, fully walkable from where the tender lands
  • The seven defensive towers along the walls, including the Porta Terra (the old Jewish Tower) marking the landward gate
  • Cattedrale di Santa Maria with its Catalan-Gothic bell tower, in the heart of the old quarter
  • Neptune's Grotto (Grotte di Nettuno): a sea cave at the base of Capo Caccia, reached by excursion boat from the harbour in about 40 minutes past the Coral Riviera cliffs
  • Red coral and craft shops along the bastion streets, the town's namesake trade

Getting ashore

Alghero is not a deep-water port, so ships anchor and tender passengers to the waterfront right beside the old-town walls; the historic center is steps from the landing. One day is enough to walk the walled town and do one offshore trip, but not both Neptune's Grotto by boat and a leisurely town visit unless you move efficiently, the grotto round-trip alone runs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours plus the cave tour.

Weather and when to visit

  • May-June (shoulder cruise calls). Mild and mostly dry, daytime highs typically in the low-to-mid 20s C with cool mornings near 14-15C. Pleasant for walking; the sea is still cool, around 18-20C.
  • September-October (autumn cruise calls). Warm and settled early on, highs typically 23-26C, easing through October to the low 20s. The first rain spells can arrive in September; note that grotto boat trips are cancelled when the sea is rough.
