Lipari is the largest and liveliest of the Aeolian Islands off Sicily's north coast, a volcanic island whose old town climbs a lava headland crowned by a walled citadel. That citadel holds one of Italy's best archaeological museums and a Norman cathedral, while the harbour squares below run on fishing boats, gelato, and island wine. It is compact enough to absorb a full day on foot.

What to do on a day in Lipari (Aeolian Islands)

• The Castello (Cittadella) acropolis: the walled lava headland over the sea, entered through a tunnel from Piazza Mazzini or the grand staircase of Via del Concordato
• Aeolian Regional Archaeological Museum inside the citadel: obsidian tools, Greek theatrical masks, and finds spanning all the islands
• Cathedral of San Bartolomeo with its Baroque facade, and the adjoining 12th-century Norman cloister reached from inside the church
• Marina Corta: the small sea-facing piazza of fishing boats and waterfront cafes, the heart of town life
• Via Garibaldi and the old-town lanes between the two marinas, lined with capers, Malvasia wine, and local shops

Getting ashore

Ships anchor offshore and tender into Marina Lunga, about a kilometer from the town center along the waterfront; the citadel and museum are an easy walk up from there. One day is comfortably enough, plan two to three hours for the citadel, museum, and cathedral, leaving time for Marina Corta, or trade some of that for a boat trip toward neighboring Vulcano.

Weather and when to visit

• June (early-summer cruise calls). Warm and largely dry, daytime averages around 23-24C with very little rain. The sea is still on the cool side for swimming early in the month.
• July-September (peak cruise calls). Hot and sunny, July and August highs reaching the low 30s C and the sea at its warmest, near 26-27C by August. September stays warm in the mid-20s but is when the first weather disturbances can return.
