Capri is a small, steep island off the Sorrento peninsula where cliffs drop into clear water and two hilltop towns hold the views. It earns the day for the walk from the Piazzetta out to the Gardens of Augustus and for the Monte Solaro chairlift above Anacapri, both reachable on foot and short rides from the tender pier.

What to do on a day in Capri

  • Marina Grande, the arrival harbor, with its waterfront and the ticket office for funicular, bus, and boat trips
  • The funicular from Marina Grande up to Capri town, about a 4-minute ride ending at the Piazzetta
  • Piazza Umberto I (the Piazzetta), the cafe-lined center under its bell tower and the Church of Santo Stefano
  • Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto), a short walk from the Piazzetta with the classic view down to the Faraglioni rocks
  • Anacapri and the Monte Solaro chairlift from Piazza Vittoria, about 13 minutes up to the island's highest viewpoint over the Bay of Naples
  • The Blue Grotto by boat from Marina Grande, weather permitting; entry closes in any swell, so confirm conditions before committing time to it

Getting ashore

Capri is a tender port; you come ashore at Marina Grande, then ride the funicular or a bus up to Capri town, and a second bus on to Anacapri. One day handles either Capri town and the Gardens of Augustus or Anacapri and Monte Solaro well; doing both is rushed, and the funicular, Piazzetta, and chairlift all jam from about 10am to mid-afternoon.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to early June (spring calls). Mild and increasingly sunny, daytime highs from the low 60s into the mid 70s Fahrenheit, with the sea still cool. Good walking weather before the summer heat.
  • June to August (summer calls). Hot and sunny, daytime highs in the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, with the heaviest crowds and longest lines at the funicular and Blue Grotto. Bring water and sun cover for the exposed viewpoints.
  • September to October (autumn calls). Warm and pleasant early on with sea still swimmable, highs easing from the high 70s toward the low 70s Fahrenheit. The first unsettled weather can arrive in the second half of September, which also affects Blue Grotto access.
