Carloforte is the only town on Isola di San Pietro, a small island off Sardinia's southwest coast settled in 1738 by Ligurian fishermen who came by way of Tunisia. Their descendants still speak Tabarchino, a Genoese dialect, and the town's pastel waterfront, tuna cuisine, and old salt pans give it a culture distinct from the rest of Sardinia. It is a small, quiet call, walkable and unhurried.
What to do on a day in Carloforte (Sardinia)
- The historic center of Carloforte: the lungomare waterfront, the old city walls, and the Church of San Carlo Borromeo on the main square
- Capo Sandalo on the island's western tip, Italy's westernmost lighthouse, about a 20-minute drive from town with cliff-top views over the open sea
- The Saline (salt pans) just outside town, where pink flamingos gather in the shallow water
- Le Colonne, a sea-stack rock formation on the south coast reached by a short drive along road 103
- The former Tonnara (tuna-processing buildings) at La Punta north of town, visitable on a guided tour, the heart of the island's bluefin tradition
- A tuna-focused lunch in town, the local specialty, at a waterfront trattoria
Getting ashore
This is a small-ship call and the dock sits right at the edge of the compact town, so the historic center is on foot from the pier with no transfer needed. One day is plenty for the town and one outlying sight like Capo Sandalo by taxi; the island is small but the coast roads are slow.
