Marseille is France's oldest city and its second largest, a working Mediterranean port with Greek and North African roots layered into its streets and food. It earns the day through the Vieux Port, the old Panier quarter above it, and the museums and basilica that frame the harbor, all within a tight core once you get in from the terminal.

What to do on a day in Marseille

  • Vieux Port, the old harbor that has been the city's center for millennia, lined with cafe terraces and a morning fish market on the quay
  • Le Panier, the oldest quarter, a climb of pastel lanes, street art, and small workshops just behind the north quay
  • MuCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations at the harbor mouth, linked by footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean
  • Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, the hilltop basilica with the widest view over the city and sea
  • Centre de la Vieille Charite in Le Panier, a 17th-century almshouse with a free central courtyard and museums
  • Panisse, the local chickpea fritter, and a glass of pastis at a Vieux Port terrace

Getting ashore

Large ships dock at the cruise terminal at Mourepiane in the north industrial port, about 5 to 6 miles from the center and not walkable. A free shuttle runs roughly every 20 minutes to the Joliette area, from which the Vieux Port is a short metro ride or walk. One day covers the harbor, Le Panier, and one museum or the basilica comfortably.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to June (spring calls). Daytime highs from the high 50s into the high 70s Fahrenheit, generally sunny with light rain. The cold, dry mistral wind from the northwest can arrive any time of year and sharply drops the felt temperature; bring a windproof layer.
  • July to August (summer calls). Hot and sunny, daytime highs commonly in the low to high 80s Fahrenheit, occasionally above 86F, with calmer winds and sea around the high 70s. Shade and water matter on the Notre-Dame climb.
  • September to November (autumn calls). Warm early, cooling through the period, highs from the high 70s down toward the 60s Fahrenheit. The wettest stretch, with rain peaking in November; the mistral can still blow cold and hard.
