Bilbao is the call where the dock and the headline sight are an hour apart, which changes how you plan the day. Ships berth in Getxo, a seaside Basque town about 15 km down the estuary from the city, where Frank Gehry's titanium Guggenheim and the medieval Casco Viejo old town wait. Getxo itself holds the world's oldest transporter bridge, so you can spend the day in the city, in the town, or split it deliberately.

What to do on a day in Bilbao

• Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Gehry's titanium-clad building on the river, reached by exiting the metro at Moyua and walking about 10 minutes
• Casco Viejo, the medieval old town and its Siete Calles, reached via the Zazpikaleak metro stop, for the Ribera market and pintxos bars
• Vizcaya Bridge (Puente Colgante), the 1893 UNESCO-listed transporter bridge in Getxo that ferries people across the estuary by suspended gondola, walkable from the port area
• Artxanda funicular, which climbs from the city to a hilltop viewpoint over Bilbao's bowl of hills and the river
• Paseo de las Grandes Villas in Getxo, a seafront promenade of grand early-1900s mansions if you stay near the ship

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Getxo terminals about 15 km from central Bilbao, a 20 to 25 minute drive or roughly 40 to 60 minutes by the port shuttle plus Metro Line 1 from Areeta or Algorta. One day is enough for either the Guggenheim and old town or a relaxed Getxo morning, but the transfer time makes trying to do everything tight.

Weather and when to visit

• May to mid-September (warmest, driest, main cruise season). Pleasantly warm days and cool nights, August around 70F as the warmest month; the driest window though this is a green, rainy region so a shower is always possible.
• September to October (early autumn). Still mild, often near 20C in early September with fewer crowds, gradually turning cooler and wetter through October.
• March to May (spring). Cool, cloudy, and frequently rainy; wind and humidity can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
