Gallipoli is a fortified old town on its own small island in the Ionian Sea, tied to the modern town and the Salento mainland by a short bridge in the province of Lecce. The centro storico is a dense knot of whitewashed lanes, baroque churches, and sea walls you can circle on foot, with a working fishing harbor that still lands octopus and sea urchin each morning. It earns the day as a compact, walkable slice of deep southern Puglia rather than a base for big regional touring.
What to do on a day in Gallipoli
- The Angevin castle guarding the entrance to the old town, restored and open, with ramparts and sea views
- The Cathedral of Sant'Agata (built from 1629), a baroque interior of frescoes, paintings, and carved stone in the heart of the island
- The frantoi ipogei, underground olive-oil mills carved into the rock beneath the old town; two are restored and open near Via De Pace and Via Angeli
- The Greek fountain (Fontana Greca) at the bridge into the old town, one of Italy's oldest
- A full loop of the sea walls on foot for views over the Ionian and the fishing fleet
- Spiaggia della Purita, the small sheltered beach tucked directly beneath the old-town walls
Getting ashore
Smaller ships can come alongside the pier, but larger cruise ships anchor offshore and run tenders in, after which the old town is about a 15-minute walk along the causeway. One day is comfortably enough for the island itself; taxis are scarce, so book ahead if you want Lecce or Otranto.
