Syracuse was once the most powerful Greek city in the western Mediterranean, a rival to Athens, and the day splits cleanly between its two halves: the ancient Neapolis park on the mainland, with a Greek theatre still cut into the hillside, and the island of Ortigia, a dense knot of Baroque streets, sea-girt and walkable. Few ports let you stand in a 5th-century-BC theatre and eat market arancini within the same morning.
What to do on a day in Siracusa (Sicily)
- Piazza Duomo on Ortigia, a Baroque square paved in pale stone, the finest in Sicily
- Duomo di Siracusa, the cathedral built directly inside the Greek Temple of Athena, its Doric columns still embedded in the walls
- Fountain of Arethusa, a freshwater spring with papyrus growing at the sea's edge on Ortigia
- Neapolis Archaeological Park on the mainland, with the Greek Theatre, the Roman amphitheatre, and the Ear of Dionysius limestone cave
- Castello Maniace, the 13th-century Hohenstaufen castle at the tip of Ortigia, with sea views
- Ortigia market, just over the bridge, for seafood, cheeses, spices, and street food
Getting ashore
Ships dock at Molo Sant'Antonio right on Ortigia, a 10 to 15-minute walk from Piazza Duomo, so the old town needs no transfer. The Neapolis park is about 2km on the mainland, a 25-minute walk or a short taxi or tuk-tuk; one day handles both halves if you pick the park early and Ortigia after.
