Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal inside the main port, with the old town entrance roughly a 20-minute walk away, not especially scenic and with little shade, so many take a taxi or the circular Bus 50. One day easily covers the old town, the basilica, the castle, and the pasta street.

Weather and when to visit

• April to June (spring). Typically mild to warm and pleasant, highs climbing from the high teens toward the mid 20s Celsius, with low rainfall. Among the most comfortable windows for walking the old town.
• July to August (summer). Typically hot and sunny, highs commonly 27 to 30C and occasionally higher when African heatwaves push past 35C. Midday in the shadeless port walk is the part to plan around.
• September to October (autumn). Typically warm and settled into early October, sea still warm from summer, gradually easing temperatures and the return of some rain later in October.
