Harstad is a working town of about 25,000 on Hinnøya, the gateway to the Vesterålen and Lofoten side of northern Norway. The pull is the Trondenes peninsula just north of the center, which holds Norway's northernmost medieval stone church, a Viking-age power seat, and one of the largest land-based artillery pieces the Germans ever installed, all on a single walkable headland.

Getting ashore

Ships berth at Larsneset Quay in the city center, so the town is at your feet. The Trondenes peninsula sights are about 3 km out, walkable in roughly 40 minutes via the heritage trail, though many take the shuttle or a taxi at least one direction. One day is comfortable for the church, the center, and the gun.

Weather and when to visit

• June to August (main season). Typically 11 to 17°C on a good day, with long daylight and midnight sun in June. Maritime and changeable; expect a mix of sun and rain showers and a gentle to fresh breeze off the fjord.
• May and September (shoulder). Cooler, often 6 to 12°C, wetter and windier, with the warmth fading quickly into September.
