Honningsvåg is a small fishing town on Magerøya island and the staging point for the North Cape, the cliff plateau marketed as continental Europe's northernmost point. The town itself is a five-minute walk of painted houses and a church that survived the WWII scorched-earth retreat; the reason ships call is the 35 km run north to a 307 m cliff over the Barents Sea.

• North Cape Hall (Nordkapphallen) at the plateau, with the globe monument, panoramic windows, and the cliff-edge viewpoint 307 m above the Arctic Ocean
• Honningsvåg Church, the neo-Gothic 1880s building that was the only structure left standing after the 1944 German withdrawal
• Gjesværstappan bird cliffs near Gjesvær, a boat safari to puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes (organized tour, the colonies are not reachable on public transport)
• Sami reindeer camps along the North Cape road, several open to short visits
• Artico Ice Bar near the dock, built entirely of ice including the glasses

Getting ashore

All the piers sit within roughly 300 m, a five-minute walk, of the main street, so the town is immediate. The North Cape plateau is 33 to 35 km north, about a 45-minute drive each way by tour bus, public bus 330, or taxi, and one day is enough for the cape plus a town stroll if you go straight up on arrival.

Weather and when to visit

• June to August (main season). Typically 6 to 13°C, July warmest near 10 to 11°C. Midnight sun roughly mid-May to end of July. The cape is exposed and the weather is fickle; fog and wind can blank the view even on a calm town day.
• May and September (shoulder). Colder and rawer, often 4 to 8°C, with snow possible on the plateau into late spring and stronger Arctic winds.
