Explora Journeys in Havre-Saint-Pierre

Havre-Saint-Pierre is a small working fishing village on Quebec's North Shore, at the mouth of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, and the launch point for the Mingan Archipelago. The draw is offshore: a chain of limestone islands carved into monoliths and flowerpot rocks, reached by boat. The village core is tiny and easily walked, so the day is really a choice between a sea excursion and a quiet stroll.

What to do on a day in Havre-Saint-Pierre

• Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve by boat, home to Canada's largest concentration of limestone monoliths, on tours of roughly 3 to 5 hours departing the marina by the wharf
• Grande Ile, with two clusters of monoliths described as a stone zoo and a castle, often with a Parks Canada interpreter ashore
• Ile Niapiskau, where the monoliths of Anse des Bonnes Femmes sit alongside fossils hundreds of millions of years old
• Anse des Erosions for the largest flowerpot rocks in the archipelago
• Place des Artisans, the craft promenade right beside the docks, and the village boardwalk and Maison de la Culture within a flat 15-minute walk

Getting ashore

Mid-sized ships dock at Wharf 2 at the village's south end and larger ships tender to the adjacent marina, either way putting you about a minute's walk from the village core. One day is enough to do a Mingan boat tour or walk the village, but combining a full island excursion with much else is tight.

Weather and when to visit

• Summer (June to mid-August). Cool and breezy by Caribbean standards, with July and August highs typically around 18 to 20 C and long daylight. This is peak puffin and seabird season; pack a layer for the open water on tours.
• Early autumn (September to October). Cooler still, highs slipping toward the low teens C with more frequent rain days, and fall color on the North Shore. Fewer birds than midsummer.
