This is the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America, the spot where Leif Erikson's people built a base camp around the year 1000, roughly five centuries before Columbus. • The Parks Canada visitor centre, which displays original Norse artifacts pulled from the ground here, including the famous spindle whorl and ring-headed pin that confirmed the site's age and origin
• Norstead Viking Village, a living-history site about 2 km from the historic site, with a chieftain's hall, blacksmith, and a boatshed
• The Snorri, a 54-foot replica Viking knarr inside the Norstead boatshed, built in Maine and sailed from Greenland to this coast in 1998
• The boardwalk trail across the coastal bog and meadow between the visitor centre and the longhouse, with open views over Epaves Bay

Getting ashore

This is a tender port with no cruise dock; the ship anchors offshore and tenders land at a small pier roughly 0.8 to 1 km from the site, a flat 15 to 25 minute walk to the visitor centre. One day is plenty to see both the historic site and Norstead on foot, since they are close together and the experience is compact.

Weather and when to visit

• July to early September (the cruise window; the site is open June 1 to October 2). Typically cool and changeable. Highs usually run about 15 to 20°C in July and dropping toward 12°C by September, with frequent wind off the water, fog, and the chance of rain on any given day. Layers and a windproof shell are the right call even in summer.
