The Magdalen Islands, or Iles de la Madeleine, are a thin French-speaking archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, closer to PEI than to mainland Quebec, strung together by sandspits between red sandstone cliffs and white beaches. What to do on a day in Magdalen Islands

• Belle-Anse, red cliffs wind-carved into smooth swirls and drops on the north shore, a short drive from Cap-aux-Meules
• La Grave heritage site on Havre-Aubert, a preserved fishing village of weathered wooden buildings, artisan shops, and galleries about 30 minutes south
• Dune du Sud, a beach beneath burnt-orange cliffs roughly 15 minutes from the pier
• The Coastal Trail (Sentier du Littoral) along the water at Cap-aux-Meules, an easy paved walk you can start from the pier
• Local smokehouses, microbreweries, and fromageries for a tasting circuit, plus lobster and herring in season
• Butte du Vent or the island high points for panoramic views across the lagoons and dunes

Getting ashore

There is no deep-water dock, so ships anchor and tender passengers to the commercial pier at Cap-aux-Meules, the main island. You can walk the coastal trail right from the pier, but the cliffs, beaches, and La Grave are spread across the archipelago, so the best of the day needs a transfer, taxi, or tour; one day covers the highlights of the central islands but not all six.
