Pointe-à-Pitre is the commercial capital of Guadeloupe, a French overseas region, and the city wears that dual identity openly: Creole markets and a French colonial grid, euros and Caribbean spice. The compact center is walkable from the cruise dock and centers on a leafy main square, two lively markets, and a serious modern museum of slavery and Caribbean memory on the waterfront.

What to do on a day in Pointe-à-Pitre

  • Memorial ACTe, the waterfront museum on the Caribbean slave trade and regional history, about a 15-minute walk from the center
  • The Spice Market (Marche Saint-Antoine), stalls of vanilla, nutmeg, colombo blends, and tropical fruit near the church
  • La Darse, the working quay where boats land the morning fish catch, snapper, seabream, and crayfish sold on the dock
  • Place de la Victoire, the palm- and tamarind-shaded central square ringed by colonial-era buildings and cafes
  • Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church, a 19th-century iron-framed cathedral built to withstand earthquakes
  • Musee Schoelcher, the museum in the former home of abolitionist Victor Schoelcher

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Port de Pointe-a-Pitre on Grande-Terre, a 10 to 15-minute walk from the compact historic center. The town is fully walkable, so a self-guided morning covering the markets, the square, and Memorial ACTe needs no transport; one day suffices for the city, though Guadeloupe's beaches and waterfalls lie well beyond the port and require a tour or car.

Weather and when to visit

  • Dry season (December to April). Typically warm and sunny with the least rain, daytime highs around 29 to 31 C, lower humidity; this is the main cruise window.

  • Wet season (June to November). Typically hot, humid, and showery with peak tropical-storm risk late summer into autumn; sea warm year-round near 27 C.
