Providenciales (Provo) is the tourism hub of the Turks and Caicos, and its reason for being on an itinerary is Grace Bay: a 12-mile run of white sand and turquoise shallows fronting a barrier reef, regularly rated among the best beaches anywhere. There is no deepwater cruise pier here (the island's South Dock is a shallow cargo port), so luxury ships anchor offshore and tender in. The day is about water and beach, not town.
What to do on a day in Providenciales
- Grace Bay Beach, the headline: calm, shallow turquoise water and powder sand inside Princess Alexandra National Park, with the reef close offshore
- Snorkeling the barrier reef just off Grace Bay and Smith's Reef, reachable by catamaran or small-boat trips that leave from Provo
- A half-day sail-and-snorkel catamaran charter along the leeward coast, the classic way to use a Provo port day
- Sapodilla Bay on the south shore, a sheltered 900-foot cove with shallow, calm water, calmer than Grace Bay when the trades are up
- Chalk Sound, an inland lagoon of vivid blue dotted with tiny islets, near Sapodilla Bay
- Bight Reef (Coral Gardens), a shallow snorkel spot off Grace Bay you can reach from shore
Getting ashore
There is no cruise pier on Provo; ships anchor off and run tenders, a 10 to 20 minute ride depending on where the ship sits, and the operation is weather-dependent. Grace Bay and the snorkel reefs are the day, and one day is enough to do the beach and one boat trip well. Plan around tender timing rather than packing in distant sights.

Weather and when to visit
- November (early-season calls). Warm and humid, highs around 29C and water near 28C, but this is the wettest month, about 12 rain days, often brief tropical showers. The tail of hurricane season, so seas can be less settled.
- February to March (peak dry-season calls). The most reliable window: highs around 27C, cool nights, very little rain (February is the driest month), low humidity, and calm seas, which matters for a tender port.
