Porto Cervo is the constructed heart of the Costa Smeralda, a yacht harbor and village laid out in the 1960s on Sardinia's northeast coast in a deliberately low-rise Mediterranean style. It earns the day for the granite coves and clear water around it rather than for any deep history, and the tender lands you right at the marina where the whole compact scene unfolds on foot.

What to do on a day in Porto Cervo (Sardinia)

  • Stroll the Marina di Porto Cervo promenade and around the Old Port (Porto Vecchio), the original arc of the harbor, watching the yachts and the cafe terraces that line the water
  • Walk up to the Stella Maris church on the rise above the new marina, a whitewashed Michele Busiri Vici design with wide views over the bay, best in late-afternoon light
  • Wander the Piazzetta and the stepped Sottopiazza, the warren of arcaded lanes built into the hillside, where the designer boutiques cluster
  • Take a short taxi or transfer to a nearby beach such as Cala Granu, a small cove close to town, or the longer sands of Grande Pevero and Liscia Ruja for the turquoise water the coast is known for
  • Join a boat excursion from the marina to the La Maddalena archipelago, a protected cluster of islands and coves offshore, if you want to spend the day on the water rather than in town

Getting ashore

Porto Cervo is a tender port: the ship anchors off and tenders run you into the marina, which is effectively the town center, so the promenade, church, and shopping lanes are all walkable from the landing. One day is enough for the village and one beach or a short boat trip; the town core itself is small.
