Pylos is a small amphitheatrical town on the southwest Peloponnese, wrapped around the sheltered Navarino Bay where the 1827 Battle of Navarino effectively secured Greek independence. It trades the crowds of bigger Greek ports for a shaded square under enormous plane trees, an Ottoman fortress on the headland, and some of the cleanest swimming water in the Mediterranean.
What to do on a day in Pylos
- Niokastro (New Navarino Fortress), the 1573 Ottoman castle on the headland, with thick ramparts, original cannons, and wide views over Navarino Bay
- Inside Niokastro, the Archaeological Museum of Pylos in the French-built Maizonos barracks, plus the Underwater Antiquities exhibitions of local shipwrecks
- The church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour within the fortress, built as an Ottoman mosque, later a Catholic then Orthodox church, with its octagonal dome
- Three Admirals Square (Plateia Trion Navarchon), the harborfront plaza shaded by giant plane trees, with the monument to the British, French, and Russian commanders of Navarino
- Voidokilia Beach, the crescent of pale sand a short drive north, often ranked among Greece's finest
- The Palace of Nestor, about 16 km away, one of the best-preserved Mycenaean palaces in Greece, for those who want a transfer inland
Getting ashore
Larger ships anchor in Navarino Bay and tender passengers to the town quay, which opens directly onto Three Admirals Square and its cafes. The town is compact and walkable, with Niokastro a short walk along the waterfront; Voidokilia and the Palace of Nestor need a taxi or tour, and one relaxed day covers the fortress, the square, and a beach.

Weather and when to visit
- May to June and September to October (shoulder, common cruise months). Typically warm and dry, comfortable for walking the fortress, with sea temperatures usually swimmable from June onward and thinner crowds in the shoulder weeks.
- July to August (peak summer). Typically hot and dry with strong midday sun and little rain. The exposed fortress ramparts offer little shade, so morning visits are easier.
