Bodrum is a whitewashed resort town on Turkey's southern Aegean coast, built over the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus on a double bay split by a castle headland. The Crusader castle and its underwater-archaeology museum anchor the waterfront, and almost everything worth seeing sits within a flat walk of the dock. One day is comfortably enough to see the town's highlights on foot.
What to do on a day in Bodrum
- The Castle of St Peter (Bodrum Castle), built by the Knights of St John from 1402 with four towers named for the English, French, German and Italian crusaders, about a 20-minute waterfront walk from the pier
- The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology inside the castle, holding ancient shipwreck finds including some of the oldest recovered hulls
- The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the tomb of Mausolus and one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, about a 25-minute walk uphill from the dock
- The Ancient Theatre, a Hellenistic hillside theatre overlooking the bay, roughly 30 to 35 minutes on foot and mostly uphill
- The bazaar lanes behind the marina, packed with shops, and the Tuesday and Friday markets when local vendors set out textiles, pottery and produce
Getting ashore
Ships use the ferry pier on the castle headland, splitting the two harbors, with the castle and town center about 2 km or a 20-minute flat walk along the waterfront. A small sea-shuttle or a short taxi covers it if you prefer not to walk. The compact center means one day handles the castle, town and one ancient site without rushing.

Weather and when to visit
- May to June. Warm sunny days, typical afternoon highs in the mid-20sC, low rain and long daylight. Comfortable for the uphill walks to the theatre and mausoleum before midsummer heat arrives.
- September to October. Still warm, highs easing from the high 20sC toward the low 20sC by late October, sea warm and crowds thinning. Among the easier windows for walking the open archaeological sites.
