Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, a layered Italian port city where a medieval hilltop citadel, the Castello, looks down over the harbor and the arcaded Via Roma runs right along the waterfront. The berth sits about 800 meters from the center, so this is one of the easier Mediterranean ports to do entirely on foot, climbing from the Marina district up into the old walls. It earns the day for genuine Italian street life, Roman and medieval layers, and a long city beach if you want sand.

What to do on a day in Cagliari (Sardinia)

  • Bastione di Saint Remy, the grand limestone terrace and staircase linking the lower town to Castello, with wide views over the harbor from the Umberto I terrace, about a 15-minute walk from the berth
  • Castello, the walled medieval quarter of narrow lanes, squares and towers crowning the city
  • Torre dell'Elefante, the 1307 defensive tower you can climb for views over the rooftops and harbor
  • Cagliari Cathedral (Santa Maria di Castello), consecrated in the 13th century, blending Romanesque and Gothic work
  • Roman Amphitheatre, the 2nd-century arena carved into the hillside above the old town
  • Via Roma and the Marina district at the foot of the port, arcaded and lined with cafes and restaurants for a flat-ground option if you skip the climb

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Molo Rinascita, about 800 meters from the center, facing the arcades of Via Roma. One day is enough to walk the Marina, climb to Castello and Saint Remy, and still drop down for lunch; Poetto, the long city beach, is a short bus or taxi ride east if you want sand instead.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to June (spring Mediterranean season). Typically warm and dry, highs climbing from the low 70s into the high 70s, comfortable for the uphill walking the old town requires, sea still cool early in the window.
  • September to October (autumn Mediterranean season). Typically warm and settled, highs in the high 70s easing to the mid 70s, the sea at its warmest around September, with the first real rain risk arriving late October.
