Frederiksted is the quieter, west-end town of St Croix and the island's only deep-water cruise call, a low-rise grid of Danish colonial and Victorian buildings facing the Caribbean. It earns the day on two fronts: a walkable historic core anchored by Fort Frederik, where emancipation was proclaimed in 1848, and a pier that doubles as one of the best shore-dive and snorkel sites in the region. This is a slow, local-feeling port rather than a duty-free shopping strip.

What to do on a day in Frederiksted (Saint Croix)

• Fort Frederik, the red Danish fort at the head of the pier, now a museum, where the enslaved population of St Croix was freed in 1848
• A walk through Frederiksted's grid of pastel Danish colonial and Victorian houses, galleries, and cafes, all within a few blocks of the pier
• Snorkeling or diving the pier pilings, a noted micro-dive site with seahorses, octopus, squid, and pufferfish (access is closed while the ship is docked, so go from the beach or a boat operator)
• Frederiksted Beach, a sandy swimming and snorkeling strand less than half a mile up Strand Street
• Cruzan Rum Distillery, about a mile and a half out, for a short tour and tasting
• St George Village Botanical Garden, around 15 minutes away on the grounds of an old sugar plantation, with more than 1,500 plant species

Getting ashore

• December. Typically warm and mostly dry, daytime highs around 28C and nights near 25C, with brief passing showers. Comfortable trade winds.
• January to February. The heart of the dry high season, typically highs of 27 to 28C, low rainfall, and steady breezes. The most reliable beach weather of the year.
• March to April. Still warm and among the driest months, highs near 28 to 29C, with consistently good conditions for swimming and snorkeling.
