Grand Turk is the small, low-rise capital island of the Turks and Caicos, a former salt-raking colony of donkeys, ponds, and pastel Bermudian houses that never urbanized. The draw is simple and genuine: a fine leeward beach steps from the ship, a dramatic offshore reef wall for snorkeling and diving, and a sleepy historic town that has barely changed in a century.
What to do on a day in Grand Turk
- Cruise Center Beach, a calm leeward strand directly off the pier with loungers, shade cabanas, and snorkel rentals
- Governor's Beach, the island's best stretch of sand, less than a mile north of the center
- Cockburn Town, the historic district of Duke and Front Streets with colonial-era houses and salt-trade ruins, about 3 miles up the coast
- Turks and Caicos National Museum in Cockburn Town, covering the Lucayans, the salt trade, and shipwrecks, with a lighthouse Fresnel lens on display
- Grand Turk Lighthouse, an 1852 cast-iron tower on the windward northern bluff
- Snorkeling or diving the wall, where the reef shelf drops off close to shore
Getting ashore
Ships dock at the Grand Turk Cruise Center on the island's south end and you walk straight off to the beach and shops. The center beach needs no transport; Cockburn Town and the lighthouse are a short taxi, scooter, or golf-cart ride away, and one day easily covers the beach plus a town-and-museum loop.
