Palermo is Sicily's capital, a layered city where Norman, Arab, Byzantine, and Baroque builders all left their mark on the same streets. The cruise dock sits a short walk from the historic core, so the cathedral, the crossroads of Quattro Canti, the Norman Palace, and three raucous street markets are all reachable on foot. It is a dense, walkable port where the markets and street food are as much the point as the monuments.

What to do on a day in Palermo (Sicily)

  • Palermo Cathedral, a single building stacking Norman, Arab, Gothic, and Baroque elements with royal tombs and rooftop access
  • Quattro Canti, the Baroque crossroads at the center of the old town, with the Pretoria Fountain a block away
  • Norman Palace and the Palatine Chapel, whose gold Byzantine mosaics are the city's standout interior
  • Ballaro, Capo, and Vucciria markets, the three historic street markets for produce, fish, and street food
  • Capuchin Catacombs, a 15 to 20 minute walk past the Norman Palace, lined with mummified Palermitans
  • Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house, a short walk up from Quattro Canti

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Molo Vittorio Veneto, roughly a 20 to 25 minute walk from the historic center and the cathedral, with the terminal gate only minutes from the edge of town. Everything central is on foot; one day comfortably covers the cathedral, Quattro Canti, the Norman Palace, and a market, though reaching the Monreale mosaics in the hills needs a taxi or tour and trades off the city core.

Weather and when to visit

  • April-May (spring). Typically warm and pleasant, highs around 18 to 23C with the year's busier tourist weather, occasional spring showers
  • June-August (summer). Typically hot, dry, and sunny, highs around 27 to 31C and rarely any rain; midday walking through the old town is draining
  • September-October (autumn). Typically warm easing to mild, highs around 22 to 27C, with rain returning toward late autumn
