Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake and set on a long sheltered lagoon. • Melissani Cave, an underground lake where midday sun beams through a collapsed cavern roof onto blue water, reached by rowboat, about a 40 minute drive east near Sami
• Myrtos Beach, the long white-pebble arc between two headlands, around a 45 minute to one hour drive north and best seen from the cliff viewpoint above
• Lithostroto, the marble pedestrian street, and Plateia Valianou, the main cafe square, both an easy stroll from the dock for lunch and the Kefalonian meat pie
• Drogarati Cave, a large stalactite chamber near Sami, often paired with Melissani on the same eastbound trip

Getting ashore

The pier sits beside the town center, so you can walk straight into Argostoli for the waterfront, squares, and turtles with no transport needed. When two ships call, the single berth means the second anchors and tenders to the old harbor, still in town. One day works if you pick one lane: stay in town and add the turtles, or commit to a vehicle for Melissani and Myrtos, which are on the far side of the island.

Weather and when to visit

• May to October (the Ionian cruise season). Hot, dry Mediterranean summers and warm shoulder months. May and the first half of October typically bring pleasant 22 to 24°C days, easier for touring, while July and August run hot in the mid to high 20s and beyond. Rain is uncommon through summer; sea is swimmable from roughly July into September.
