Roseau is Dominica's small capital, a grid of weathered French- and English-colonial streets pressed between the sea and the green wall of the Morne Trois Pitons mountains. The cruise berth puts you in the middle of town, so you can do the museum, market, cathedral, and botanic gardens entirely on foot, then taxi twenty-five minutes into rainforest for waterfalls and hot springs. Dominica is the Caribbean's nature island, so the real reason to spend the day here is what is just outside the city, not the shopping.

What to do on a day in Roseau

• Old Market Plaza (Dawbiney Square), the cobbled former slave-and-produce market right off the berth, now a craft and souvenir market in the old French Quarter
• The Dominica Museum and the nearby Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven, a Gothic-Romanesque Revival church built by the early French settlers, both a short walk inland
• The Botanic Gardens at the base of Morne Bruce, founded 1890, with a Sisserou parrot aviary and the famous bus crushed by a tree from Hurricane David
• Trafalgar Falls, the twin Mother and Father falls reached by a short rainforest boardwalk about twenty-five minutes by taxi from the pier
• Titou Gorge, a narrow swim-through canyon, and the warm sulphur springs of Wotten Waven, both a short drive up into the hills above town

Getting ashore

Ships use the downtown Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, which lands you steps from the Old Market and within a 5 to 15 minute walk of the museum, cathedral, and botanic gardens; the secondary Woodbridge Bay berth is about 1.5 miles north and needs a taxi. One day is enough to combine an hour of town on foot with one rainforest excursion, but you cannot do the city and a full Boiling Lake hike in the same call.

Weather and when to visit

• November to early December (early-season call, wettest stretch). Warm and green, highs around 29 C, but this is the tail of the wet season and November is the island's rainiest month; expect passing downpours and slick rainforest trails.
• January to March (peak cruise season, drier). The transition into the dry season, highs around 28 to 29 C with steadily falling rainfall; February is one of the driest months, the most reliable window for the waterfall and gorge excursions.
