Zadar is a walled Dalmatian town on a stone peninsula, layered with the largest Roman forum in Croatia, a 9th-century Byzantine church, and two modern installations on the seafront that have made it a genuine destination rather than a Dubrovnik overflow. The whole old town is compact, flat, and made for walking off the ship without a guide.

What to do on a day in Zadar

• Sit on the steps of the Sea Organ at the tip of the peninsula, where wave action pushes air through 35 tuned tubes in the pavement to make a shifting, low chord
• See the Greeting to the Sun next to it, a large solar disc set in the pavement that stores daylight and lights up after dark
• Walk the Roman Forum, the largest in Croatia, laid out from the 1st century BC and free to wander
• See the pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donatus, the round 9th-century stone church that is the symbol of the city, standing on the forum
• Climb the bell tower of St. Anastasia's Cathedral for a view over the red roofs and the harbor
• Find Five Wells Square, the 16th-century cistern system behind the old walls and Land Gate

Getting ashore

Larger ships dock at Gazenica, the cruise port about 4 km from the old town, reached by cruise shuttle or taxi in roughly 15 minutes; only small ships take the dock right at the old town. One day is plenty. The compact old town can be walked in a few hours, leaving room for a meal or a short island boat trip.

Weather and when to visit

• April to October (the cruise season when ships call), peaking July to August. Warm and dry through the summer with highs commonly in the upper 20s to low 30s C / 80s F and reliable sun; shoulder months in spring and autumn are milder and pleasant for walking.
