Catalina, off Southern California, is a half-day of water and a half-day of Avalon's 1929 Casino, which despite the name was always a ballroom, never a gaming floor.
This itinerary rewards a traveler who likes to be off and moving, who wants a different harbor every morning and does not mind that towns like St. John's and downtown Puerto Plata are quick browses with the real prizes a short drive out. Skip it if you came for sea days, slow mornings, and a deck chair. The pace does not allow for that.
