Trogir is a small medieval town set on its own island between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, about 17 miles west of Split, and its tightly packed core has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997 for being one of the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic towns in Central Europe. The whole walled old town is car-free and crossable in fifteen minutes, so a day here is an unhurried wander through stone lanes, a cathedral, a Venetian fortress, and a harbor-front promenade. Small luxury ships increasingly use Trogir directly while Split's main pier is under reconstruction.
What to do on a day in Trogir
- The Cathedral of St Lawrence (St Lovro) and its 1240 Radovan portal, the most important medieval carved doorway on the eastern Adriatic, with Adam and Eve, the zodiac, and hunting scenes worked into the stone
- The cathedral's 47 m Gothic-Renaissance bell tower, a climb of more than 100 steps to the best view over the red roofs and harbor
- Kamerlengo Fortress at the southwest tip of the old town, a 15th-century Venetian stronghold whose walls you can walk for views over the marina and Čiovo
- The main square with its town loggia, clock tower, and the Cipiko Palace, the cluster of civic buildings at the heart of the old town
- The Riva, the seafront promenade lined with cafes where the tenders and small ships tie up, the natural start and end of a walking loop
Getting ashore
Trogir functions as a tender and small-ship pier: boats land or moor along the Riva on the mainland side, a few steps from the old-town gate, and larger ships often visit Trogir as an excursion from Split, about 40 minutes by coach or roughly an hour on city bus 37. The old town is small and entirely walkable, so one day, or even a half day, comfortably covers the cathedral, fortress, and lanes without rushing.

Weather and when to visit
- May to June (early season). Warm, dry, and stable with gentle westerly breezes, daytime temperatures roughly in the low 20s C. Comfortable for walking and climbing the bell tower before peak heat and crowds arrive.
- September to October (late season). Still warm in September, around 19 to 25 C, easing to 14 to 20 C by October, with the sea still warm from summer and noticeably fewer visitors in the lanes and ports.
- July to August (high summer). Hot and sunny, often above 30 C, and the busiest stretch in the narrow old town; the stone lanes hold the heat by mid-afternoon.
